David DeWitt Carpenter, 94, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 3, 2024.

He was born on June 13, 1929 in South Gibson, PA.  David was the son of the late Dewey and Florence (DeWitt) Carpenter.  He grew up on dairy farms on Gillette Hill and the DeWitt Homestead Farm in North Jackson, PA.

In 1947 David graduated from New Milford High School.  After graduation he and his brother Bill went to work on large dairy farms in Pennington, NJ.  David then worked at the Singer Furniture Factory in Hallstead, PA and enjoyed his job making chair samples for furniture shows.  He also worked for several years at the Binghamton Container Company.

David overcame polio as a child and became a contractor, building many houses.  In 1959 he built his first house on the property next to his parents’ farmhouse and started his own general contractor business.  He was known in Susquehanna as David Carpenter the Carpenter.  For over 46 years David built homes, garages, additions, roofs and did remodeling jobs. He built the bookcases for the Susquehanna Branch Library and helped in the planning of the new Library.  In addition, David was involved with Habitat for Humanity.  He was the caretaker of the Lamb Cemetery in Jackson, PA for 35 years.  David was a hardworking man known for his honesty and faith in God.

David is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol (Luthy) Carpenter and six children:  Michael, Joel, Maria (Robert) Wolf, Julie (Eric) Stallings, Carolyn (Michal) Bartczak and Carissa (Thomas) Sheehan.  Eight grandchildren:  Zachary Carpenter; Cody, Brendan and Noah Wolf; Ryan, Andrew and Sarah Stallings and Kathleen Sheehan.  He was one of eleven siblings and is survived by his sister, Mary Vincent.  David was predeceased by five sisters:  Carol Speck, Eleanor Carpenter, Gustava Oberhouse, Martha Yalch, Esther Ross and four brothers:  Gregory, William, Richard and John Carpenter.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family.  David enjoyed spending time with his family, wood working and completing projects around home.  He also liked sitting on the porch with his cat Max and bluegrass music.  David loved going on adventures:  rides on country roads, visiting parks, checking out historical sites and family vacations.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Endless Mountains Health Systems for their excellent care.

A private family service will be held at the North Jackson Community Church with burial at the Lamb Cemetery in Jackson, PA.
