March 25, 1938 - July 3, 2024

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather,  David James Nolan, passed away at home in Deposit, NY on July 3rd, 2024.

He is predeceased by his parents Clarence Michael Nolan and Gwendolyn Fortner Nolan as well as his brother, William Fortner Nolan, father and mother-in-law Fenton and Ethel Busfield, and sister-in-law Margaret Joan Rees.

David leaves behind his wife of 65 years, June Busfield Nolan, his daughter Kathleen Richardson (Joseph) and son S. Patrick Nolan.  David is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Matthew, Benjamin, and Joshua, his sister-in-law Doris Hanrahan Nolan, her five children Dorinda Lupold (Tom), Deborah Nolan Glazer (Dave), Stephen Nolan (Marie), Mark Nolan (Maria), Dan Nolan (Heidi) and their families, his sister-in-law Suzanne Feehan and her children Suanne Schmidt (Bob), Deborah Feehan, Julia Wheeler (Ron), Stephen Feehan (Maureen) John Feehan (Julie)  and their families, his brother-in-law Martin V. Rees and his sons Michael Rees (Michiko), daughter Chloe and Andrew Rees (Juraj).

David was born at home and spent his childhood in McClure, NY.  He loved to spend his summer days helping out at the Pazzelli farm.  As a teenager he made deliveries to the residents of Oquaga Lake from his family’s store in McClure.  He was proud to have attended a one room schoolhouse in McClure and later went to Deposit Central Schools for later elementary, Middle, and High school. As a boy and young man he was very involved in Boy Scouts all the way through to achieving Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed playing basketball and football at Deposit High School.  He earned an associates degree from Broome Technical College and immediately started his long and successful career with IBM.  David worked for IBM in various areas: Waltham, Mass; Poughkeepsie, NY; Fishkill, NY; Burlington, Vt and Endicott, NY.  He moved up through the company to upper management and retired early at the age of fifty-five.

At the end of his career, David moved back to his roots.  He transferred to IBM in Endicott and he and his wife, June, and son, Patrick, moved into his mother’s home on 30 Main Street in Deposit, NY.  He became very involved in the community as he joined the Lion’s Club and got involved in serving as a village trustee and even took on the office of mayor for a three year term. He also became active in Christ Episcopal Church in town.  He went through training and served as a Verger for several years.  David always loved living in Deposit and McClure.

Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and cars.  He enjoyed spending time with his son, Patrick, at various stock car raceways in the Southern Tier.  Patrick grew as a driver and David loved supporting him in the pit.  David was very involved in several hunting clubs throughout his life, most memorably the Hopewell Jct Rod and Gun Club and later in life, the McCabe Hollow Hunting Club.  He looked forward to trips to the Adirondacks to fish and to Canada to hunt for deer and bear. David cherished time camping with his family in the Adirondacks each year.  He would do all the cooking, especially getting up early and making pancakes and eggs and sausages!  He loved taking his kids canoeing and hiking and on long speed boat rides through multiple lakes and ponds. Sitting by the campfire looking out over Fish Creek Pond was one of his favorite pastimes.

After his grandchildren arrived, the family trips migrated south to Florida with visits to Central FL where his grandchildren lived. Vacations changed from the mountains to the beaches on Sanibel Island. He highly valued visits with his grandsons each summer at Oquaga Lake as well.  Each winter, the family would all meet at various ski resorts in the North East spending each day frolicking on the slopes!

David also enjoyed collecting antique tractors and a few antique cars. He put his tractors to work plowing the earth and planting corn up at McCabe Hollow and had fun driving his Model T in the town parade.

Katie’s Kafé in Deposit was David’s favorite place to have lunch.  You could find him there with his wife, June, surrounded by friends of the Round Table, eating soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

David will be deeply missed, but you know if you could ask him how he’s doing now, he’d say, “Finer than frog’s hair!”  We trust that he is soaking in the glory of Heaven!
