Donald Haynes Jr.
Of Starrucca, PA
Donald Haynes Jr. of Starrucca, PA passed away on Monday evening, March 11, 2024, at the age of 78. Born January 24, 1946, in Hancock, NY, to the late Donald Haynes Sr. and Helen (Box) Haynes. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Susan Campino-Haynes. JR was the oldest brother to: Diana Hurlburt (married to Bernie Hurlburt), Dale Eskow (married to Joe Eskow), Darl Haynes (married to Carol Eltz Haynes) and Darwin Ike Haynes. He grew up on the Haynes dairy farm and graduated from Susquehanna Community High School in 1964. He met Mildred Crompton Haynes at Villa Como, Lake Como, PA. They were married on May 26, 1967, and raised two sons: Donald Haynes III (married to Patricia Henry Haynes) and David Haynes (partner to Natasha Warner). They are blessed with three grandchildren: Raegan Haynes, Riley Haynes, and William David Haynes. Donald had a strong bond with his family and shared his strength of character with his nephews (Jason Hurlburt and Mark Eskow) and countless friends and coworkers.
Donald was hard working, knowledgeable and very social. Many of you may know him best by one of his nicknames: JR, Junior, Don, Pad, Pat, and his favorite “Pops”. Over his lifetime he worked doing construction, mechanic, sawmill, small business owner, insurance sales and later in life retiring as a butcher with Giant & Weiss Markets. His work ethic and outgoing personality made Don one of the best butchers around. However, his sons (Donnie & Dave) would say that his greatest work was owning and operating Haynes Market in Starrucca with his wife Millie of 56 years.
Donald’s love of people was present in all he did. He not only enjoyed hunting himself, but he processed thousands of deer for others. He enjoyed making kielbasa and sausage with his dear friend Charlie. He gave back to his community by serving on the Starrucca Cemetery board, Starrucca councilmember, and writing workshops for dirt and gravel grants. Don truly valued human connection and one of his favorite ways to connect with others was by playing cards. Pops love for card playing has been passed on from generation to generation and will continue to “play on” for many more. He will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, 747 Jackson Ave, Susquehanna, PA on Wednesday March 27, 2024, from 1-3pm and 6-8pm.
