Eric Herschel

Of Susquehanna, PA

Eric Herschel, 50, of Susquehanna, PA, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026. He was born in Southampton, PA, on November 21, 1975.

A man of few words, Eric let the life he lived speak for him. He was humble, hardworking, thoughtful and unfailingly kind. He had a remarkable steadiness about him—a quiet, even presence that made people feel comfortable and safe. He listened more than he spoke, rarely rushed to judgment, and possessed the kind of wisdom that didn't need an audience. He was intelligent without ever needing to prove it, strong without being forceful, and respected because he gave that same respect so freely to others.

Simply put, Eric was a good man.

Above everything else, he was devoted to his family.

For 17 years, Eric made an extraordinary daily commute—three hours to work and three hours home—to provide for his wife, Judy and their sons, Sean and Colin. He never made much of the sacrifice. That wasn't his way. He simply got up, went to work, came home, and did what needed to be done for the people he loved.

And that was Eric. His love was found less in grand gestures than in a lifetime of showing up. It was in a meal he cooked, something he fixed, a conversation, a quiet word of encouragement, or simply the comfort of knowing he was there.

Nowhere is Eric's legacy more evident than in his sons. He taught Sean and Colin largely by example: work hard, think for yourself, treat people well, remain steady when life gets difficult, and take care of the people you love. He was immensely proud of the young men they became.

Eric started life as a city guy but found his place in the country—and, as it turns out, he had known where he belonged for a very long time.

In his third-grade yearbook, students were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. Eric's answer was simple: he wanted to live in the country and ride four-wheelers.

And that is exactly what he did.

He loved riding ATVs with his kids, working around his property, spending time outdoors and hanging out on the river with his family. He loved soccer, watching football with his sons, cop shows, going to concerts and learning new things. Eric traveled the world and experienced places many people only dream of seeing, but for all the miles he traveled, he was always most content at home—with his family and his beloved dog, Blue.

He was deeply proud of his German ancestry, something reflected in the German meals he loved to cook for his family and in his collection of German steins—small pieces of a heritage that always remained important to him.

Eric never stopped learning. A graduate of William Tennent High School, he also earned his certification in Medical Assisting, and attended Bucks County School of Aeronautics, where he studied to become an aircraft mechanic. More recently, he proudly earned his Associate Degree from the University of New Hampshire and was about to resume college to achieve his Bachelor's Degree.

He spent nearly 20 years working at Climatic Testing Systems in Hatboro, Pennsylvania as an electrician and manager, before beginning a new chapter in facilities management at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, New York. He also gave his time generously to his community, volunteering for many causes. Wherever Eric went, people liked him. They trusted him. He made friends easily and genuinely, and it is hard to imagine him having an enemy in the world.

Eric was, in every sense, a salt-of-the-earth man. Dependable. Decent. Unassuming. The kind of person who worked hard, kept his word, treated people well and quietly did what needed to be done. He never needed recognition for the good he did or the sacrifices he made. His strength was quiet, his presence steady, and his love constant.

Eric was predeceased by his father, William Herschel and his loving dogs Buster, Charlie, and Brooklyn.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, and their sons, Sean and Colin; his mother, Gisela Herschel; his brothers, Peter and Kurt; his sisters-in-law, Beth Zincone, Kristine McLaughlin, Joanna Osterhout, Stefanie Burdick and Melissa Colello; his brothers-in-law, Nick Zincone, John Zincone, John Freitag, Bill McLaughlin and Bill Osterhout; and a very large and deeply loved extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

His family, friends and community mourn a man whose presence was never loud, but whose absence will be enormous.

Eric Herschel built the life he dreamed of as a boy—and, in the quiet and steady way that was so uniquely his, made life better for everyone fortunate enough to share it with him.

That is a life very well lived.

An intimate Celebration of Life will be held in Susquehanna County, with a second Celebration of Life in Bucks County open to family, friends and all who knew Eric. Details will be shared at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Eric's memory may contribute to an education fund established for his sons, Sean and Colin Herschel, at Peoples Security Bank.
