John “Jack” P. Kane

Of Susquehanna, PA

John Paul (Jack) Kane, age 97, of Susquehanna, PA went to be with his Lord on October 29 th . He was predeceased by his parents Benedict and Frances (Perry) Kane, brother Padraic (Packy) Kane, and his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth (Betty Tuskey) Kane. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Brian) Lewis; Son, Christopher (Kelli) Kane; grandchildren, Felicia (Drew) Aldinger, Gina (Josh) Dibble, Benedict Kane, and Matthew Kane; step-grandchildren, Mandy Lewis, Micah (Mandy) Lewis, Dan (Jenna) Lewis and Carrie (AJ) Sowers; and great-grandchildren, Ezra, Talea and Roczen Dibble and Eden Aldinger; nephews; nieces; and cherished circle of friends.

A graduate of Laurel Hill Academy (Cass of 1943), Jack attended Catholic University of Scranton, PA, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University in New York City.

An U. S. Army veteran of World War II, He served as a combat armored infantryman in the Sixth Armored Division under George S. Patton’s Third Army in Europe.  His Military Awards include: The Combat Infantry Badge and The Bronze Star.  Jack was also a member of the American Legion Strider-Tesky Post.

Jack was a Social Worker and College Professor for half a century.  Among agencies that he served included: Executive Secretary at Vermont Catholic Charities in Burlington, VT; Social Services at Broome County Catholic Charities in Binghamton, NY; Alcoholism Counselor at Allentown General Hospital in Allentown PA; Social Worker at Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, PA; and In-service Educator at Barnes-Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna, PA, where he served on the Board of Directors for several decades following his retirement. A member of Saint John the Evangelist’s Parish of Susquehanna, PA.

Jack taught Sociology and Social Work courses at Villanova University, School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA; Marywood University, Graduate School of Social Work in Scranton, PA; and Trinity College in Burlington, VT, where he was an Associate Professor in Human Services.  He also taught American History, Civil War, World War II courses at Luzerne County Community College at the Susquehanna Community School satellite campus. His son, Chris, also accompanied Jack to area school districts for Military History class presentations.

Jack’s family would like to thank Barnes-Kasson Hospital’s and Skilled Nursing Facility’s physicians and staff for the care and love that was bestowed upon Jack in the several months that he was a resident and patient.  Your sensitivity was not only appreciated, but a Blessing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 11 at St. John’s Church, Susquehanna, PA.  Interment at St. John’s Cemetery to follow.

The family will receive friends at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Inc., 747 Jackson Ave. Susquehanna, PA on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, from 5 to 7pm.
