Richard Smith “Smitty” Axtell of Deposit, NY Richard Smith “Smitty” Axtell, 73, of Deposit, NY passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY. Smitty was predeceased by his parents Moses R. & Doris (Smith) Axtell and wife Sandra Axtell. He is survived by his brothers Daniel (Sarah) Axtell and Peter (Alan) Axtell; nephews Jesse and Joshua Axtell; niece Abigail Stevens; and beloved great-nieces and great-nephews. Smitty was born in Deposit, NY and grew up on the Axtell family farm in “China Valley”. He graduated from Deposit Central High School and then attended the University of Albany; followed by attending the University of Delhi where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Agriculture. Smitty was owner of the Rookery and Axtell Antiques. He was one of the most highly regarded antique dealers in the northeast for 55 years. Smitty was an Antiquarian and true master of his craft. He served as past President of Deposit Rotary, was founding member and President of the Deposit Historical Society, a Master Mason of F&AM Lodge #396 in Deposit, a devout member of the First United Methodist Church of Deposit, and many Antique Associations (including New Hampshire Antiques Dealers Association - NHADA ). Smitty was a lifelong learner and had a strong passion for history. He believed that true wisdom, beauty and knowledge can be found in the past by studying the history of those that have gone before us. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 9:00 – 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Deposit, NY with a Memorial Service following at 11:00 am. A funeral luncheon will be held after. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Deposit, 109 Second Street, Deposit, NY 13754.
