Richard F. Buffington Sr.
Of Deposit, NY
Richard Francis Buffington Sr. (Dick), of Deposit, NY, passed away on January 13, 2023 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY, surrounded by family. Born in Dushore, Pennsylvania on May 24, 1936, he was the son of the late Charles and Martha Cook Buffington. He was predeceased by his parents Charles & Martha Buffington; brother Charles Bufffington; and sister Margaret Kelly.
Richard is survived by his children Richard & Wendy Buffington, Thomas & Susan Buffington, Christopher & Lydia Buffington, and Jennifer & David Lobdell; grandchildren Patrick, Kayleigh, Jared, Hannah, Madeleine, Derek, Grace, Luke, and Bryan; great granddaughter Allison; brother William & Sandra Buffington; sisters Patricia Onufry, Kathleen & Larry Fox, and Theresa Motika; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Richard graduated from Laurel Hill Academy in 1955 and went on to enlist in the army in 1958, where he spent 2 years in active duty (serving in the same battalion as Elvis Presley!) and 4 more years in the reserves, before moving to Deposit, NY with his family in 1968.
His time in the Army was only the beginning of Richard’s lifelong commitment to serving his community. He was involved in many events and organizations, but to name just a few of his notable contributions, Dick served as a president of the Rotary Club, as a Boy Scout leader, on the Village of Deposit Board of Trustees, as a member of the Masonic Lodge, and volunteered for the Deposit Foundation. His service and care for his community continued into his career, working as a salesman, then the owner and operator of the Village Floor Store (alongside his brother, Bill) and finally finishing his career as a school bus driver.
Although not everyone will remember Richard as a ukulele player, a pancake maker, a survivor of a lightning strike, and a part-time clown, there is no doubt that many will have their own memories of him.
His family would like you to join them in remembrance of their father during calling hours on Friday, January 20, from 4-7pm, at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, 78 Second St., Deposit, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or online https://donate3.cancer.org .
