Robert G. Mcnamara, Sr.

April 3, 1927 — December 12, 2013

Robert G. McNamara, Sr., Susquehanna, PA Robert (RG) McNamara, Sr., 86, life-time resident of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, took his last detour on life’s journey. After an extended illness, RG passed away to join the rest of the heavenly McNamara’s Band. He leaves behind his loving and caring wife, Mary Dantini McNamara and his children and their families who will revere him and cherish his memory forever: Robert and Carol (Klaiber) McNamara, Jr., Susquehanna, PA and grandson Stephen; Br. Patrick McNamara, fms, Marist Brothers-Chicago, IL; Dennis and Jane (Rouse) McNamara and granddaughters, Dr. Erin and Alison, New Milford, PA; Maureen McNamara and special friend Roland Ausborn and grandchildren, Mallorie, Dallas, and Robb , Aurora, NY; Ann McNamara and special Corey Reeves, Endicott, NY. Born in April, 1927, in Susquehanna, PA, to Mary Connelly McNamara and Thomas McNamara, RG loved West Hill, his town, his life, and his family. Most relatives and neighbors of Bob’s generation have predeceased him, including his parents, his sisters, Rosemary Berger and Dolores Johnston and brothers, Thomas and Patrick. From the time he was a young man, RG loved the outdoors! There was no outdoor sport, clambake, bbq or parade that he didn’t thoroughly enjoy. He was especially fond of fishing, hunting, gardening and golfing. Bobby was a devout Roman Catholic, and a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. He attended St. John School and graduated from Laurel Hill Academy in 1945. Following the death of his brother Patrick in WWII, Bob enlisted in the US Navy. After his time in service, he immediately returned to his hometown. Bobby joined and worked at the American Legion Post where he met his future bride, Mary Dantini. Soon after, Bob was hired by the Erie Railroad and worked as a conductor and yardman until the company moved on in the 1970’s. At that time, Bob joined the US Postal Service as a mail carrier. RG was a “man of many hats.” Although he loved his hunting, fishing and golfing hats the best, he was a mailman, a railroader, a union rep, a Democratic committeeman, a Street Commissioner, a Councilman, a Constable, a Knight of Columbus, a fireman, an ambulance driver, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (his Irish Derby), and his favorite role, a husband, a father to his five children and grandfather to his six grandchildren. His few remaining Irish cousins include Dorothy Manley , Indiana, and James McGuane, Jr. , Florida. RG’s extended family include his many loving in-laws, Josephine Dantini Buell, Binghamton, NY; Carolina Dantini Stein, Susquehanna, PA; Joseph and Donna Dantini, Sayre, PA; Julie Dantini, Laurel Lake, PA; nephews and nieces and short-tailed relations throughout the land; and many dear friends and classmates who all can recount wonderful stories of RG’s wit, love of music, singing, dancing and good times. The family will receive friends at Hennessey's Funeral Home 747 Jackson Ave. Susquehanna, PA 18847 (570) 853-3127. on Tuesday December 17, 3-7pm. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. John Church, 15 E. Church St., on Wednesday December 18 at 11am; followed by burial service at St. John Cemetery, Susquehanna, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 who provided care for Robert throughout the past months or to a charity of choice.
