Walter D. Stein

March 14, 1923 — May 26, 2013

Walter “Stosh” Stein Of Susquehanna, PA   Walter “Stosh” Stein, 90, died Sunday at Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna, PA after a short illness. He was born on March 14, 1923, the youngest son of the late Walter and Helen “Szymborski” Stein. Stosh was a lifelong resident of the area and took great pride in his hometown of Susquehanna, PA. Stosh graduated from the Laurel Hill Academy. He was proud of his Army Air Corp service to his country in World War II. Stosh served in the 389th Bomb Group as a tail gunner, flying 30 missions in the European Theatre. After serving in the military, he met the love of his life, Carolina Dantini. Stosh and Carolina married on June 30, 1951, and spent 61 years together. His greatest source of pride and joy are his two sons, who carry on his memory, Dick and wife Mary Beth, of East Hampton, MA, and Phil and wife, Liese, of Susquehanna, PA. Stosh greatly treasured his three grandchildren Jenny, Amy, and Ashley, as well as his many nieces and nephews. Stosh was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond and Edward. Stosh had a long career as a carman and retired from Conrail after 37 years. He was also an avid sportsman. For many years he encouraged youth to participate in sports. He was actively involved in little league, baseball, football, and basketball. Stosh was known as the fairest high school PIAA basketball referee.  The foundation of Stosh’s life was his Catholic faith, his family, his many friends, being a WWII veteran, and his Polish heritage. Stosh was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 86, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 794, and a life member of the VFW Post 6223. The Stein family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. B. Patel and the Staff of Barnes Kasson Hospital. Words cannot adequately convey our appreciation for what you have done. The Mass of Resurrection to celebrate the life to Walter Stein will be offered on May 31, 2013, at 11am at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 3-5 Griswold St. Binghamton, NY 13901.
